Tyler Florence

Update 4.1.2009: The random number generator has spoken, and the winner is commenter #5, Peter from Kalofagas! Thanks to everyone who left a comment telling me about their favourite post.

Not literally;-) I’m referring to Tyler Florence’s new cookbook Dinner at My Place. I met him tonight at a Planters event promoting the relaunch of their entire line of products which are now made with sea salt. I got a copy of his new book and also had a chance to talk with him for a bit. He seemed like a pretty down-to-earth guy and we talked about his plans as well as the direction food content is heading.

Tyler moved his family out the Bay Area around the time I moved out the NYC and it sounds like he’s been busy, opening several kitchen stores with plans to open 2 restaurants in SF. He’s also launching a new service on his website that will let anyone subscribing to the service email him questions they have about food. As for the book, it covers themed menus from his new digs in Mill Valley and is packed with color photos. I haven’t had a chance to make anything out of it yet, but from a quick scan of the recipes, it looks pretty solid.

Ironically, I won a copy of the same cookbook last week from Seduction Meals, so now I have two copies and want to give one of them to you. Just leave a comment below with the title of your favourite post from this blog along with what you liked about it. I’ll pick a winner at random on April 1st, and email the winner to get their address.

OMG when I read the title, I was so excited for the opportunity to have dinner at your place even though i’m in Sydney. Considering all the stuff you’ve whipped up throughout the last couple of weeks, I’d imagine you’d host awesome dinners. Oh wells.. I guess the book is good enough =D.

As a wannabe photographer and cook, stumbling onto your website that merges the two has been awesome. With that said, finding out your dirty secret has inspired me! Hence, my favorite post title was: Adobe Lightroom Tutorial (a.k.a. my dirty little secret) =)

Are you serious? You’ve got waaay too many posts for me to pick my fave – lol. I’m all over this blog though…and that cookbook sounds hot.

    girlichef March 27, 2009 at 8:29 am

Okay…seriously hard to pick a favorite, but Crustless milk and cardamom “pumpkin pie” was one of my favorites! I’m a big fan of all things autumn! Fingers crossed :)

    Peter March 27, 2009 at 8:40 am

Good to know Tyler was amiable during your brief chat. As for a memorable dish of yours…that tagliatelle with sea urchin butter is sticking in my brain.

Hey I left you a message on your ‘Ume’ Salad post, about prep, and have a question…elizabeth@cookappeal.com

    Ginny March 27, 2009 at 9:56 am

oh Marc! Don’t tease me like that! I would come to NYC if you would cook me! :)

    Marysol March 27, 2009 at 10:15 am

Marc, I already ordered the book, so don’t bother including my name in the drawing. But, I wanted to add how jealous I am you got to meet Mr. Florence.
I’ve never met him in person, but he seems very down to earth and an all around nice guy.

Btw, at first glance, I also thought you were inviting the whole cyber gang over to your place. Hah.

Did Tyler mention his babyfood? I heard he’s promoting a new line of it. Favorite post? I really enjoyed New Orleans (part 1), and it made me want to plan a trip.

    starrytear March 27, 2009 at 10:37 am

I really love the interesting combination of mouth-watering ingredients in nearly all of your recipes.. but what I REALLY enjoy are the ‘cultural’ additions, ie. new years in Japan, reminding me of the first time I visited my husband’s hometown Fukuoka. that being said, my favorite post so far is the recent WBC entry…food is indeed a great way to offer peace, in attempt to lessen what feels like hatred among the two countries. i am inspired to try that with our friends some day.

    autumn March 27, 2009 at 11:09 am

fav post= crustless “pumpkin pie” it’s gorgeous and gf!

    Kate March 27, 2009 at 11:14 am

‘Sopa de Ajo con Huevo’ – not a hands-down favorite out of all I have to choose from on your site, but pretty far up there. (It’s starred in my reader.) Why? The Spanish caught me first – always a fan of Spanish anything – and then I saw the recipe + photo. Caramelized garlic? Homemade giant croutons? I’m SO there.

I always secretly thought that some semi-hard cheese grated on the top would be a finishing perfection, but then that might be my love of French onion soup sneaking about…

Kitchen Vixen March 27, 2009 at 11:48 am

I read most of your posts, but what’s coming to mind right now is the New Orleans post- those pictures! The food! I’ve never been to New Orleans, but have a desperate desire to go. Oh the pictures- I just drank them up.

    Yvo March 27, 2009 at 11:58 am

I liked your post describing uni and how to pick it. Sounds simple right? But that’s what I liked… I don’t know about most though. :)

    Jillian March 27, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Meyer Lemon Spound Cake! I can not wait to make that!

    Scott March 27, 2009 at 1:44 pm

I have made many recipes out of Tyler’s Ultimate cook book. I like that most of his ingredients are very accesible. As for your post I was fascinated by the Pork Belly/Kimchee pizza. Unfortunately my wife doesn’t do either of those things but eventually I will try it out.

    Rachel March 27, 2009 at 1:53 pm

I’ve particularly enjoyed your Japanese food posts, and I’m going to pick your ‘Guest Post and Kitsune Udon’ post because that’s the first recipe of yours I tried …loved it!

    Kristin March 27, 2009 at 2:09 pm

You post about crepes was especially helpful. I had never made them before I guess because I thought they were hard to make and your tips really helped me realize how simple the actually are to make. I am now a crepe wizard … thank you!

The Duo Dishes March 27, 2009 at 2:38 pm

TYLERRRRRR! Lucky you to get to meet him. He’s a master!

    David March 27, 2009 at 6:00 pm

New Orleans (part 1)! I moved away back in 1983; has it been 26 years already? Your photos made me home sick. When do we get part 2? db

Miracle berry party! I bought a pack after I read your post.

    Mole
I was always intimidated by this dish…as it seemed so complex and impossible to replicate. I tried making mole for the first time from your recipe…and it turned out so wonderful…who would have known what wonderful things are included in the seductive sauce….thanks! I love your website!

    Romeo March 28, 2009 at 12:21 am

    Love your page…

    Brenden March 28, 2009 at 5:40 am

N’Olans Part 1, as i am a huge cajun food fan, living in europe, and a little homesick. Where’s part two?! And the deconstruction of the gumbo was great. My tip: use duck confit. The slow cooked meat imparts a whole new complexity that fresh duck cant touch.
    Thanks for the GREAT website!

Culinary Cory March 28, 2009 at 7:47 am

I’ve been following your blog for quite awhile. I found the article on MSNBC really interesting.

    Howard March 28, 2009 at 10:40 am

Your photo came out much better than mine. I’ll be blogging about the evening sometime next week…

    smita March 28, 2009 at 10:47 am

Marc! I just listened to you on NPR – awesome!! You sounded great! Great to see the blog grow – my favorite post is the Kasha corn fritter. My favorite non-food post if the lightroom tutorial with the before and after pictures. You have a great mix of style and complete honesty – good wishes and look forward to seeing new successes!

    Kwan March 28, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Hey! I heard you on Studio 360 today while driving back fr. the Asian market. Couldn’t wait to get home to check out your site. The first post that I see is about my tv boyfriend Tyler!! I would LOVE a copy of his new book! I am going to explore the rest of your blog but so far I like the spicy lemongrass crab post. Good luck with your blog and good luck to me to win Tyler’s book!

    Jenni March 28, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Marc, I enjoy all of your posts. You are Poised for Greatness! I guess if I had to choose a favorite, it would be the Conejo en Mole Rojo because I was drawn to the deep, rich color of the sauce. And the Uni post sticks in my mind, too. I so appreciate your willingness to improvise and to share your thought process with your Loyal Readers.

Much continued success to you; you certainly deserve it!

    jessichat5 March 28, 2009 at 5:54 pm

My favorite post would have to be the first one I read: which is “Butter Fried Flounder Roe.” Thanks to Googling flounder roe, I was brought me to your wonderful corner of the World Wide Web! I also love this post because it highlights the simple preparation of frying the roe in hot butter while incorporating marked details such as the use of smoked salt and a nutty cheese.

I’ve been hunting for flounder roe sold on its own. However, I do usually request a “lady flounder” from the fishmonger at Citarella and he does usually select one for me with a nice, full belly full of roe.

    marc March 28, 2009 at 6:20 pm

If you’re shopping at Citrella I’m assuming you live in NYC? If so you can get flounder roe in season at the fish monger in Union Square as well as the one in the Grand Central Market. Hope that helps.

    Holly March 28, 2009 at 6:44 pm

So many to choose from Marc, I have to say off the top of my head Valentines Dinner and Kim Chee pizza (sorry can’t just pick one). And darn I thought it would be at you place since I am going to NYC in October.

    Peter G March 29, 2009 at 8:46 am

My favourite would have to be your steamed curry fish cakes in cucumber water…I remember you saw the idea in a daydream!

    Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella March 29, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Heh I thought this was literally dinner at your place! Now that would have been an exciting win indeed although the book too sounds amazing :)

we are never full March 29, 2009 at 6:59 pm

to be honest, i’m not really a fan of tf. his show and delivery gets under my skin and his frat-boy thing is getting a bit old. but i’m sure he can cook just well (even though, marc, i think you’re prob. better and more creative than him -just sayin’).

with that said, i’d still be open to checking out a cookbook by him to see if my annoyance can be reversed by a good meal.

as for your posts – my fave? that’s tough. but i will say i really enjoyed the crab one and the tip on the seafood sellers under the bridge. everything you do is good, let’s be honest. to pick one fave is hard!

    Bkim March 30, 2009 at 12:52 am

I think this is a great prize!
I chose the Kimchi Pork Belly pizza post because I love pizza with unusual toppings, like sweet potato or potato, and kimchi pork belly combines two of my favorite things. Planning to try it soon.

    Jessica March 31, 2009 at 4:52 pm

I like the post on pandan wrapped roast pork. I took a cooking class while on my honeymoon in Thailand, and we made chicken fried in pandan leaves. It was delicious and beautiful. I’ve not cooked with or eaten anything using pandanus since, but your post reminded me of it and has inspired me to seek them out.

    Allison March 31, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I like the japanese curry rice post. mmmmm yum

Newlywed Chefette March 31, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Hi! Just found your blog — my husband heard you on NPR and said I should check it out. I’m hooked, and will be following! Would love a chance at Tyler’s book — I always get hungry when I read his recipes. My favorite post (so far) is the firecracker scallops w/ linguine. Cheers!

    Lauren April 1, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Cooklyn Improv….seriously, the coolest idea ever!

Joe Hirsch April 1, 2009 at 12:42 pm

What I like about your site is the new and healthy alternatives to cooking.

    John-Patrick April 1, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Cooklyn Improv was my favorite. Loved the action and process that was captured.

    Dani April 1, 2009 at 4:15 pm

No Recipes Vol.’s. They’re the most interesting… and yummy.
