April Dinner and a Movie Roundup

April 23, 2009 · 36 comments

The theme for the April Dinner and a Movie was Wedding Crashers, and I’m glad to report that not a single person submitted a wedding cake. The movie isn’t really about food, and I was so happy to see that people got creative, going in 5 very different directions. It really captures the spirit of what this event is about and that was exciting to see.

This month, we moved the posting day for Dinner and a Movie to the 20th to avoid collisions with a much bigger blog event that happens at the end of the month. Hopefully, now that posting day will always fall on the 20th of the month, more people will have a chance to participate in upcoming months.

If you’d like to learn more about any of the dishes below, just click on the photos to go to the original posts.

“A creamy dairy-free honeydew sorbet, inspired by “Kitty Kat” Cleary’s scene where she tries unsuccessfully to seduce John. ”

“The first thing that attracted my attention was actually the trellis at one of the wedding settings. Then I noticed that the lavish events invariably seemed to take place in spring, and that the pastels of the bridesmaids’ gowns reflected this. And it was actually the delicate spring colours, the silks and chiffons, the extravagance of the details on dresses, hats and fascinators which inspired my ‘creations’.”

- Zabeena from A Lot On My Plate

“Who doesn’t love a great wedding? If you attend enough weddings, you eventually come to recognize “standard wedding fare”. These are the items that seem to pop up at every reception, as though there was some universal wedding menu checklist that every bride had to choose from. Those mini quiches, shrimp cocktails and Swedish meatballs never fail to make the cut. For my submission I’ve made the King of the Cocktail Hour: Rumaki! I don’t think I attended one wedding during the 80′s that didn’t have this little gem on buffet line!”

- Susan from Sticky, Gooey, Creamy, Chewy

“I had this simple poor man’s soup, made with recycled bread, tomato and basil, at a posh socialite tuscan wedding which I crashed and, just like in the film WEDDING CRASHERS, bluffed/charmed/drank my way through the reception.”

- Lola from Aglio, Olio & Peperoncino

“For this month’s DaaM, I decided to take the go with the ‘Crashers’ part of the name over the ‘Wedding’ part, sneaking in some roasted yellow beet to give these cupcakes a vibrant blond hue. Although it started out as a mischievous idea, the combo belongs together.”

Love the theme of this one, and you got some fun submissions. The double scoop of sorbet made me giggle thinking of the Kitty Kat scene. And adding ‘golden’ beet puree to deepen the color is a great idea… It’s never even occurred to me to do that with the golden variety! Did you say Dulce de Leche Buttercream???
